Matthew’s Pizza, Baltimore, MD

The torch may have been passed to the growing vanguard of newer pizzerias in Baltimore, but the long string of memories and pizza eating at Matthew’s is likely to continue for many years to come. If you like deep dish style pies and haven’t been to Matthew’s Pizza yet, do yourself a favor and head over to Eastern Avenue and let us know what you think of the pizzas served in Baltimore’s most charming pizzeria. Particularly on a cold winter night, you just might run into me wolfing down a Great [...]

Slicecapades! v1.0

A couple of days before the 4th of July, the initial Slicecapades! journey cast off from Baltimore. In the end, Fourth of July related traffic would snarl my adventure and put the kabash on several planned stops. I’m upset with missing out on these stops and wanted tasting fatigue to be the deciding factor on when the day would end, but I did the best I could given the wretched stop-and-go traffic I had to muck through. The bloggermobile returned back to my home in Baltimore at 2:02am, a little over sixteen hours after setting out from my house the day before. I visited twelve pizzerias, six in Maryland, three in Brooklyn and three in Manhattan and sampled seventeen slices of pizza (eating a few of them whole) over the course of the [...]

Joe Squared, Baltimore, MD

On a good night, the Mushroom Lover’s pizza is a tour de force. Consisting of a tomato sauce, variety of mushrooms, thyme, mozzarella, provolone and ricotta on a porcini powdered dough, this pizza can be divine. The moderate smokiness from the coal fired oven does wonders to enhance the flavors of the porcini powdered dough, whose inherent earthiness is further enhanced by the hint of thyme mixed in with the toppings. The amount of smokiness from the coal oven really seems at times to push the limits before becomming too powerful in this pizza, without ever stepping over the line. This is a compelling pizza which fills the mouth with both powerful flavors and more subtle notes which build into a sublime mix as you eat [...]

Pizzeria Speranza, Baltimore, MD

I agree with the part of the City Paper’s review of this pizza which mentions it “comes as close as any” to replicating the thin slices of pizza sold in the New York area. However, “as close as any”, in the Baltimore pizza market, means you are still a ways off from the real [...]

Zella’s Pizza, Baltimore, MD

The Olive’s Roasted Eggplant looked equally attractive, with fresh looking eggplant and peppers joined by black Kalamata olives, which had shrivelled from the heat of the oven. All of these were attractively placed an a creamy white canvas of feta cheese and mozzarella, which had melted in places and was browned in others. Highlighting all of this were bright red slices of red pepper. A good looking pizza for [...]

Casa Mia, Baltimore, MD

This is another pizza that is very pizza kittish in quality. There is too much gooey (I like gooey cheese, but this is gooey in a not good way) cheese on top of a standardized crust. The crust displayed very small and uniform aureoles, indicating some heavy handed rolling or sheeting. From the side, the crust is mostly flat from tip to lip and slightly thinner than Pasta Mista and Vito’s, which allowed the crust to obtain some crispiness in places and add some textural counterpoint to the cheese. Alas, the dough was virtually tasteless and just there….. [...]
